At the age of 5, I declared to my parents that I wasn't going to get married, ever. And for the majority of my life I felt this was right for me. Marriage seemed so old fashioned, lumbering , patriarchal and irrelevant. Then I met Amanda and my thinking shifted. I now believe that marriage as a concept is ready to be redefined. It has such gravitas – nothing else comes close. But here in Australia the only place available to us is getting married at the British High Commission. And so that's where we will be doing it. So today in preparation we've collected some of the the old gold wedding bands from dead relatives and are getting new rings made, symbolising a modern idea of marriage between two people who love and respect each other. That's all, simple really.
